The curse of success

Success teaches you virtually nothing.

The real learning comes from the the micro and macro "failures" (I prefer the term feedback opportunities) that preceded the success.

Success can be a curse. This occurs when you mistakenly conclude you have nothing else to learn.

I see this with some new Ivy League graduates.

I see this with some new first year consultants.

They stop learning.

In a world that is continually changing, the moment you stop learning is the moment you stop growing.

It's a risky path. The consequences don't occur immediately, but they do start accumulating.

In addition, when you succeed, the tendency is to think you're somehow better than everyone else. You're not. You're just more successful. There's a difference.

(Re-read that last paragraph and soak it in. It took me a lifetime to learn its true meaning.)

If you take the last paragraph to heart, it can completely change your outlook on life as it has for mine.

Impediments to Progress

======================

In this country the thought of slowing down is seen as an impediment to progress. You have to keep going up. You have to continue to be better than before. But slowing down should not be seen as weakness. Most importantly, we shouldn't feel guilty if we decide we need to slow down.

That's where my life is at right now. Even before the bar exam was over, I came up with so many different projects to work on and as soon as the exam was over, I told myself to get back to that hustle. I had to get another success lined up.

But in all honesty while these new projects are worth doing for a lot of reasons, I also realize that I have not been happy.

I've been trying to create a void within and trying to then fill that void with new mountains to climb and conquer. Most times we are creators of our own misery when life really is just beautiful and neutral. Perhaps what I need more than anything right now is a time to slow down and have a period of solitude and true self reflection.

I am very much about progress especially progress within. Perhaps progress also means slowing down and relearning about yourself. Perhaps progress means slowing down to just live and enjoy the moments of the here and now. Perhaps progress means just being content with the present.

Biggest Problem

======================

One of the biggest problems I’ve had is something that I have been trying to work

on for some time. Even in writing this first sentence, the problem is following me.

For the longest time, I’ve been hard on myself. I get hard on myself for even

the smallest things. There have been a lot of times when I should be praising

my hard work or success, but instead, I am telling myself that I should

have been better, or I should be doing more.

There comes a time when in trying to seek perfection, you are really achieving imperfection. You become your own biggest critic.

It’s great to always aim higher than before, or to expect more of yourself, but even that

in itself is very dangerous if you are constantly beating yourself up.

You have to control your thoughts, or at least be very mindful of what you are thinking.

Is it that you are always criticizing yourself? Not applauding your success but focusing on the things

that you perceive as failure?

I know I need to work on becoming my number one fan.

Don’t become your worst critic where all you are is a constant critic of yourself.
