Fasting of the mind
=====================+
Today marks the first day of the holy month of Ramadan
for Muslims.
Inner Peace Be Upon You has subscribers of many faiths, and
those who do not share a common faith or are not sure. This
issue is about Ramadan, which is practiced by Muslims, and I write this issue
so that there is better understanding because
only through knowledge can there be inner peace within ourselves and others.
Ramadan marks the beginning of fasting from food, drink,
sexual relations, and smoking from sunrise to sunset for those
capable of fasting (women who are pregnant or menstruating,
children, the old, the sick, or those traveling are exempt). It marks
the revelations and word of God in the form of the Holy Qur'an to Prophet Muhammad (peace be
upon him) from Angel Gabriel.
The things mentioned above are the physical needs of the body,
and that is only the first layer of fasting. For some this first layer
of fasting will take its course throughout the month, and there is
nothing wrong with that. However, the true spirit of fasting
is not the hardships of making sacrifices of the physical, but
the fasting to cleanse the spiritual aspects of the inner self from
the toils and commonalities of daily life.
The fasting of the spiritual means the fasting of the mind. This means
watching what you think. You work on increasing your patience so you
don't get angry so quick. You fast your mouth so you are careful not to backbite or
speak ill of others. You fast your eyes so you don't look at
things that will give you bad thought. You fast your ears so you don't
hear things that will hurt or decrease your spiritual worth. You fast your
hands so you don't engage in any type of touching that are more the desires
of the physical.
The fasting of the mind is the most difficult for people for those who fast, and
those who do not. Being able to not eat or drink water is something that if
we are required or have to do for one reason or another, we easily can.
Fasting of the mind requires much greater effort, but ultimately does help
more with inner peace because it elevates you to a higher sense of self.
This in turn resonates to a higher sense of inner peace.
Fasting is not just for Muslims but anyone who wishes to get past their
physical needs of this world, and wishes to elevate their spiritual
well-being.
Ramadan Mubarak to those subscribers who take part in it.
