The treadmill
======================
The treadmill hummed along at my normal running pace and
elevation. A man got on the treadmill next to me and began
running. I was on a cruise and in the ship's gym.
I generally run fairly silently. My feet normally meet the
treadmill without much fanfare or noise. I've learned that the
quieter you run, the less jarring it is on your joints. Noise
comes from shock and shock isn't the best thing for your joints
if you're going to do a lot of running.
I heard his footsteps.
Each step was plop, plop, plop on the treadmill deck. His pace
was smooth, steady and fast. Every few minutes, he would vary
his pace up and down by adjusting the speed of the treadmill.
I began to notice the physical effect of what I and so many
others teach.
Who you run with affects your own pace.
I didn't bring my earphones, thus I didn't have any music
playing. Running to music helps you to set your pace by
listening to the beat of the music. Since I didn't have my ear
buds in, I heard the man next to me. Because his footsteps were
much louder than my own, I couldn't help but run in sync with
his steps.
If he sped up, my steps sped up even though I didn't change the
speed of the treadmill. I adjusted. If he ran slow, I lengthened
my stride to slow my steps. If he ran fast, I shortened my
stride so that each time he plopped, so did I.
This is a real principle of association. Many people don't like
to talk about it because it seems elitist but it is as real as
any physical law.
Who you run with determines how fast (or slow) and how far you
run. It applies to just about every area of life.
Birds of a feather not only flock together, they go to the same
destination. Statistics prove that your income will generally be
the average of your five closest associates or friends.
The truth of change often reflects this principle. If you want
to do more, earn more, have greater health, live at another
level of joy, you often have to run with a different set of
people.
Everyone has peaks and valleys. I'm not talking about abandoning
anyone because they are in a valley of life. But some people
spend the majority of life in the valley and some on the
mountaintop.
Whomever you choose to run with will greatly determine where you
will likely dwell.
