My blue convertible
======================
I remember the first day she arrived. She made
my heart race. I daydreamed about all the places
she could take me. All the heads that would turn, and
all the attention I would get--and yes, it did get me a lot
of attention.
A couple of years ago I purchased a midnight blue Lexus SC430.
A hardtop convertible. A car with a high caliber for
performance. Plush leather interior. Light wood-trim. Top-rated
stereo system. Seat warmers. The works.
The car really was beautiful and I got it at an age that most
people would only dream of being able to.
A lot of the purchase and wanting for this car was to feed
my ego. Knowing the prestige it gave me in college of driving this car.
Knowing I would attract more females. Knowing I was able to afford it
and pay it off the day I bought it.
I would wash this car every weekend to keep it clean and spotless.
I was tied to this car. This car was one of the ways I identified
myself with.
Yet, here I am now selling this car.
I don’t drive it anymore. It just sits in the garage collecting dust.
Although the car is just as beautiful, it has lost the appeal it
used to once have for me.
I think to myself, “Why?”
I realize I do not associate myself with the car anymore.
I realize I have worked to start becoming in control of my ego.
I realize that I don’t like tying myself to material possessions.
I realize I am no longer wanting to be a slave to the status quo.
Don’t get me wrong. I am not saying it is wrong to buy a high-end
luxury car or luxury anything. If you like something and you aren’t
going to be a slave to debt then go for it. I am not saying I am
not going to try to enjoy some of the fruits of this life--people who
know me know I am very ambitious.
I am more saying I have tried to tame my ego by not thinking
I am better than anyone else by owning something like my Lexus
SC430.
I am more saying who I am as a person is not defined by what I
own.
I am more saying my priorities in life are changing as I get older.
Who I am as a person is defined by my relationship with my maker,
how I treat others, and the good I try to do around the environment I
am in.
My SC430 will forever be in my memory as my first luxury sports
car, but just like everything else in life, its time has passed and
its purpose has been served.
